April 3, 2012

Merit Network, Michigan’s longest running research and education network, is driving REACH Michigan Middle Mile Collaborative (REACH 3MC). The initiative is to build 2,287 miles of advanced open-access, fiber-optic network through underserved rural communities in Michigan’s Upper and Lower Peninsulas. REACH-3MC II is a broadband stimulus project initiated and funded by the grant from Broadband Technology Opportunities Program or BTOP which was part of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 (ARRA); often cited as the Stimulus Package.

Merit Network announced selecting Capital Communications, Inc. from a host of strong proposals based on the scope of their work, the timely fashion it’s completed in and the technical requirements of the enterprise. The intent is to provide backhaul to key connection points in Minnesota and Wisconsin along with Michigan to connect 105 community anchor institutions that will grow to surpass 900.
